Definition |
Infection, usually bacterial, of single or many segments of the urinary tract from kidneys to the urethra.

General Measures |
Adequate fluid intake. Normal diet, with vitamin supplements.

Follow Up |
After 2 and 4 weeks. Repeat urine culture after cessation of a course of antibiotic therapy.

Inadequate Response |
Improper dose or frequency of antibiotic administration. Cause for persistence of infection like reflux, obstruction to urine flow, calculus etc. To organize a urological work-up |

Prevention |
Avoidance of unnecessary catheterization. Avoidance of therapy for asymptomatic bateruria, when not indicated (see above). Young women to be advised on regular emptying of bladder during travels, or sojoums outside home.
