Infection, usually bacterial, of single or many segments of the urinary tract from kidneys to the urethra.

Adequate fluid intake.
Normal diet, with vitamin supplements.

Repeat urine culture after cessation of a course of antibiotic therapy.

Avoidance of unnecessary catheterization.
